Terms and Conditions for Contributors IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR POSTING ON THE WEBSITE THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS NEED TO BE MET. 1. Only first-person accounts by refugees coming to and settling in Canada will be accepted for consideration. 2. All accounts must be written in either English or French, Canada’s two official languages, in order to be considered. If the refugee writes in another language it will be the refugee’s responsibility to commission and pay for an accurate translation. 3. All submissions must include the full name and short biography of the author, must be submitted as an MS word (not pdf) document for editing purposes, and must include the author’s mailing address and telephone number. 4. No submission may be longer than 3,000 words. IN ORDER TO BE POSTED ON THE WEBSITE THE AUTHOR MUST AGREE TO THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS. 1. The author allows the moderator/administrators to edit the document for grammatical and editorial purposes in order to improve the reading experience. Only author-approved edited stories will be posted. 2. The author understands that the story will be subject to a verification process, which may result in its not being posted. 3. The author retains copyright of the story and is licensing the story for posting on this site without any financial or other remuneration. By giving permission to post on this site the author agrees that the terms and conditions for copying of the author’s material by third-parties used by this site (Creative Commons Non-Commercial, Non-Derivative 4.0 International License) apply to the posted story. 4. The author agrees to be identified on the site as the story’s author. 5. The author gives permission to the moderators/administrators of the site to provide written permission on the author’s behalf to third-parties for reproduction of the story under the terms and conditions on this site for users. The author will be informed of such permissions and these permissions will only be granted in the best interests of the author and with the author’s approval. 6. The author acknowledges that the moderators/administrators of the site may remove the posted story at any time without cause given. Such removal is authorized by the author before hand and the author will have no recourse against the site or its moderators/administrators for such action. Of course, the author will be informed of any such action. 7. The author warrants that the submitted/posted story is an original creation of the author’s, that it is truthful, that it violates no copyright, that it has not been previously published in other formats or online, and that any supplementary visual material, both stills and videos, that are submitted along with the story belong solely to the author and that the author holds copyright on such material or has the written permission of the copyright holder. 8. The author acknowledges and agrees that there may be a risk to the author of unwanted attention through the posting of their story on the Web. The moderators/administrators seek to protect the privacy of the authors, but the author assumes all risks associated with the posting of their story on the site. 9. Should the story not be accepted for posting on the site this decision is final and may not be appealed by the author. 10. After a posting has been on the site for a minimum of 90 days the author may request in writing to have the story removed from the site. The request will be honoured by the moderators/administrators within 7 days. The co-editors (George Melnyk and Christina Parker) of Refugees and Canada: Stories of Hope and Resilience have signed a book publication contract with Athabasca University Press. The book to which you are a contributor will be published under the Creative Commons Attribution-Non-Commercial-No Derivative Works 4.0 International public license, which is the way all the Press’s books are published. The Press believes that open access is part of its mandate to disseminate knowledge. Open Access means that the book will be published in various payable formats and also as a free readable/downloadable chapter in pdf format on the publisher’s website. Anyone in the world can read or download your chapter if they wish without any payment for personal use only. As co-editors we believe this is the best way for your story to be available to others globally and for friends and relatives of yours to access your writing without needing to purchase the book. We are grateful for your contribution and we believe that you appreciate the benefits of open access publication. Below is a memorandum of agreement that we would like you to sign to confirm your contribution to the book. Terms and Conditions for Use of Material 1. The material on this website is copyrighted by the authors. No reproduction of any kind is allowed (other than exceptions below) without the explicit written permission of the moderators/administrators of this website, who are administering the copyright for the authors of the stories. 2. Researchers may quote in part from these stories for their research projects, which may or may not be published in other formats. No use of the full or substantial part of any story is allowed without the explicit written permission of the moderators/ administrators of the site. All quotes taken from this site for research purposes must include an attribution to the site and to the story’s author and its title. 3. This site is a non-profit in the public interest. It does not allow any reproduction of its material for commercial purposes. 4. None of the material on this site, either in part or in whole, may be modified, altered, re-written or used in any derivative form whatsoever. 5.
